Name: Mordred
Canon: BBC’s Merlin
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Point: through 5.10
Number: 072
Setting: Camelot
History: Mordred first arrived in Camelot as a young boy with his master. However, when they tried to enter the gates, they were confronted by the Knights of Camelot. Mordred was able to get through into the city, but was seriously wounded. They were both taken into custody, and tried against Uther Pendragon. Mordred was able to escape, and found a way to reach out to Merlin for help, knowing he would die if he did not receive help. Merlin did come to his aid and took him into the castle to hide him, and spent a great deal of time trying to keep him from Arthur, especially with the help of Morgana, whom became very attached to Mordred.
Mordred’s wound became infected, and he grew very ill. Merlin failed to heal him and had to get help from Gaius. While Mordred was ill, he informed Merlin that, to the druids, Merlin is known as Emrys. Gaius agrees to help themn, but only if they get Mordred out of the castle. Once it is agreed upon, Morgana tries to sneak Mordred out of the castle, and is caught by Arthur. Mordred was taken to the dungeons to be held, awaiting his death at the hand of Uther Pendragon.
Arthur eventually, after much persuasion by Morgana, assisted Morgana and Merlin both in getting Mordred out of the castle. They took a secret passage, under the castle. However, Merlin having been told he prophecy of Arthur’s fate by the dragon, chose not to assist in his portion of the plan, to allow Mordred to be captured and killed. However, he finally decides to go after Mordred uses his telepathy in order to coax Merlin out. Merlin does free them into the woods, and they ride Mordred to safety.
Mordred is seen again when Morgana’s power starts to show itself. She seeks the druids for help, and Mordred cares for her. However, Uther’s men raid the camp, leaving the druids to scatter. Mordred barely escapes a group of the soldiers. Mordred uses his abilities to push the men away and he escapes, returning with his clan.
Mordred leaves the druids later in his life and joins up with a group of bandits, led by a man name Alvarr, who possessed magic. Mordred and Alvarr both convince Morgana to steal the Crystal of Neahtid. Mordred, when Morgana returns with the crystal, is elated to see her. However, Alvarr is brought to trial after Arthur and his men attack the camp. Merlin is told by the dragon at this point that Mordred and Morgana will make an evil alliance. This prompts Merlin to trip Mordred in his escape, leaving him vulnerable in front of two soldiers. However, Mordred uses his magic on two of the soldier’s spears and kills them both, continuing in his escape. He looks back at Merlin, however, and tells him that “I shall never forget this, Emrys, and I shall never forget.”
Mordred is not seen again as a young boy, but he returns to canon as a young man. He begins to travel with a group of bandits, no longer in any way associated with the druids. In fact, the bandits seem to be working as bounty hunters for Morgana in some fashion. They come upon Merlin and Arthur trapped in the woods. Ragnor, one of Mordred’s allies at the time, is ready to kill both Merlin and Arthur, but Mordred reveals that Morgana would wish to determine their fates. He helps Arthur and Merlin up, and thanks Arthur for saving his life. When Merlin realizes who he is, Mordred creates an air of suspense and mystery by smirking.
He travels with the bandits, Merlin and Arthur in the snow, trying to care for them both, but finds that Merlin is the most reluctant of them all, not trusting him, as he has just seen a vision that reveals Mordred as the sole reason for Arthur’s death. Arthur and Merlin escape, however, and Mordred chooses not to jump a snow bank to go after them, instead letting them continue on. When Mordred and the bandits arrive at Ismere, Morgana bypasses all others, recognizing Mordred immediately and welcomes him in. When Morgana hears news that Arthur and Merlin have escaped, Morgana’s rage is uncontrollable and Mordred tells her she must calm herself. Morgana does eventually hear the bells signaling Arthur’s arrival into the caves, and goes after him with Mordred at her side.
Morgana pins Arthur, and injures Merlin. She is near to killing the King, but Mordred decides to stab her in the back, literally, to save Arthur. Because Morgana showed no mercy, even for a former friend, Mordred decides to help Arthur who still shows goodness and remorse. It is then that Mordred saves Arthur’s life, returning the “life-debt” he had told Arthur he owed him, and goes to Camelot where he is Knighted under Arthur. Merlin is skeptical, and worried, however, and questions Mordred’s intentions, but Mordred assures Merlin that he is there because he believes that Arthur is wholly good.
Mordred begins to train in Camelot, even going against Arthur, proving himself a worthy swordsman. Even Arthur himself is nearly bested by the young Knight and Arthur sees promise in him. Thus, he allows Mordred to go on a journey with them into the White Mountains. Mordred, filled with pride and honor, thanks Arthur graciously and swears that he will not regret it. It’s not uncommon to see the Knights teasing MOrdred throughout the series, as he is the youngest and newest Knight. They often hide his things or tell him false customs – he rides backwards on a horse when they travel the first time, and he is told that he may have left many things behind for the trip. Mordred laughs at first, but his expression turns briefly sour afterwards.
Merlin is skeptical that they should bring Mordred on the journey, because he is so young (even though he is honestly worried about the prophecy). They witness the death of Osgar, a sorcerer, and as Merlin makes a grave for the man, he and Mordred speak of freedom for magic users. There is a celebration afterwards for Mordred, for having completed his first mission. His second mission takes much more convincing on Arthur’s part, but the King finally allows Mordred to go to the cave of the Disir. Unfortunately, on this mission, Mordred is seriously wounded and the men retreat for Camelot. Merlin tells Arthur that he cannot help Mordred’s wound, even though Merlin knows the wound can only be healed by magic. Gaius confirms this afterwards, but Merlin struggles with the idea of Arthur’s destiny. Arthur decides to take matters into his own hands and asks the Disir to save Mordred’s life, but the Disir says it will only be granted if Arthur accepts magic into Camelot. When he does not, it angers the Disir. Yet Arthur returns and Mordred is well again. They have a merry duel, Mordred wins and grows closer to Arthur, gaining the King’s fondness and respect.
He also protects Merlin’s identity countless times, especially when Merlin begins to escape with Finna, helping her run from Arthur’s men. Mordred makes certain that no one knows Merlin is with her, even though he knows very well she is.
Mordred also assists Merlin and Arthur when they are attempting to save Guinevere from the dark magic Morgana has used on her with the mandrakes. When they have fallen off of a rocky ledge, by no accident, Mordred arrives and uses a rope to pull them up. They are attacked by Aithusa and Merlin sends them both ahead as he speaks to the dragon. Mordred, alarmed and confused, asks Merlin what happened, but there is no real answer. Mordred falls unconscious when Morgana arrives. Mordred fights her off, telling her that her magic will never prevail because it is rooted in hate, and we get a very strong idea of Mordred’s attitude towards justice, and he knocks Morgana back and returns to Merlin and Arthur.
Personality: Mordred, as a young man, seems to be very quiet and reserved. When he was a young boy, he was living in hiding with the druids in a time when Uther Pendragon killed at any mention of magic. To have magic was dangerous, was deadly, and this not only instilled fear into Mordred at a very young age, but also taught him hate. However, upon his return to Camelot at Arthur's side, he seems much more confident and sure of himself, however, he remains just as silent as before. Even when Mordred saved Arthur and Merlin in the forest upon their first reuniting, he says nothing more than a few lines, assuring Arthur that he would help them, if only because Arthur saved his life once. Then, without anything else, he smiles at Merlin, and he is immediately shrouded in a sense of dangerous mystery.
Mordred does not share his thoughts very openly, and even for one as young as he is in comparison to other knights, he is careful in what he says. Not only is he hiding the fact that he is a druid and a user of magic, but he also must keep Merlin's identity secret. This sort of stoicism can also be seen when we first see him with Morgana again, as she goes into a rage about wishing Arthur dead. Instead of feeding into the ideal that forceful magic will make magic free, he instead calms her, saying very little. He doesn't speak on his believes, he does not tell her whether he wants Arthur dead or not, but instead he says "Calm yourself", nothing more or less. He always says exactly what he means, and is very mindful about his words.
While Mordred can be a very serious character, he is passionately loyal as well. When he joins Arthur's ranks, he does everything he can to prove his loyalty, to show Arthur he is hard working and capable. Of course, he does all of this in hiding his magic. Mordred is an incredibly patient soul, and always keen to see the good in people. This is another reason Mordred is so willing to be loyal to Arthur. When Arthur stands to be hanged, Mordred believes in Arthur's good heart, and trusts that when he asks for mercy, it will be given. Mordred believes utterly in the good in people, at least before he feels he has been betrayed by both Merlin and Arthur. He is naive in some ways, due to his youth, and wants to believe that everyone, at the heart, has good in them. Even with Morgana, when he simply stabs her, there is remorse in his expression. No doubt he may see the gentle woman he knew as a child, but he did not kill her when he likely could have at least attempted more than a mere stabbing.
The major turning point in Mordred's personality, of course, is when Kara is hanged, despite his pleadings to the King to save her. Merlin tips off Arthur that Mordred intends to escape with Kara in the night, despite his best wishes. Even when Kara and Mordred are roaming through the tunnels trying to escape, he looks nearly horrified that Kara would kill someone innocent, that she would not think twice about killing those in her way. He follows her, however, for the sake of survival.
Mordred's loyalty is very deep, and when Kara dies by hanging (even though Arthur attempted to grant her mercy, a second chance) he leaves. In many ways, Mordred wants very much for magic to be brought into peace, for magic to be used openly in Albion without question. He put that faith and trust in Arthur, and when Kara died, it stood as a symbol that Arthur could not be trusted to stand and fight for magic in Albion. The anger from losing a loved one, and for feeling suddenly that the whole world has changed, is enough to send Mordred to Morgana's side. Instead, he chooses to fight alongside Morgana, who does not question magic but instead embraces it. Tired of hiding, Mordred easily falls into this ideal.
However, loyalty still comes into play with Mordred, even when he is fighting Arthur. He does not pause or hesitate to kill him, but he does not use his magic, either. Instead, he fights Arthur with a blade (albeit a blade forged by magic and the dragon's breath) but he fights him as Knight would. When Mordred is dying, he tells Arthur that "you gave me no choice", which implies that, in many ways, Mordred was so passionate about the future of magic, that he had to move forward and choose the path that would not only avenge Kara, but bring about a different world, not governed in Merlin's fear of magic coming to light.
Overall, Mordred is loyal, passionate, idealistic and secretive. He is immensely quiet but resolute, always acting with purpose and with certainty.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: Mordred comes from a line of druids, and is predisposed to magical abilities. As a young boy, he shows extensive power, able to defend himself against many men as he tries to escape. He displays a fair amount of magical prowess as well when defending Arthur from Morgana as they attempt to save Guinevere, and when he escapes from Camelot, blowing the door off of the prison cell. His magic is also a weakness, as overall from the canon point he will be in game, he is docile, and hides his magic away instead of secretly using it like Merlin does.
In his time learning with the Knights, Mordred also learned considerable swordsmanship, proving a formidable opponent for even King Arthur. However, he has shown no sign of being especially talented at hand-to-hand combat.

Mordred always has a sort of mysterious air about him. It’s difficult to read his expressions, but he is very young all the same (in comparison to the other Knights). He is relatively average in height, has dark, wavy hair and fair skin. He has striking blue eyes, which are likely his most notable feature.

Mordred wakes with a start. The room is far too bright, the smell is foreign and his head pounds mercilessly, blurring his vision for a moment. He stumbles and presses his hand to a wall – it doesn’t feel like stone, nor like tree bark, and he doesn’t know what to think when he focuses on the cool surface. Metal. A wall made of metal.
He pulls his hand back sharply, his heart racing in his chest. Where was he? How did he end up here? It’s only then he realizes how cold it is, how very cold the whole room his and he’s left with nothing on. Just moments ago he could have sworn he was with Arthur and the Knights at a feast, the memory feels distant, unreachable in some ways. It makes his head ache again and he hisses, rubbing a hand over his face. The number etched onto his skin glares at him and he knows he is in trouble. The entire place looks foreign to him and he presses his back against the cool metal of the wall.
“Where is this place?” he says out loud, and he can hear the murmurs and whispers of passing people, but their faces are unknown and instead he moves down the corridor to the locker rooms, confused and disoriented. This was not Camelot, this could never be Camelot in any fashion. There are sounds and smells and objects he’s never experienced before and he stands in the doorway, wide eyed and uncertain. No doubt a Knight of Camelot should never look so wary, so lost, but his mind is foggy, his head aches and he’s started to shiver.
If he could find Emrys, perhaps, or Arthur – they would be here, wouldn’t they? How else would he be here without someone looking for him? But perhaps in some ways it is better that the pair aren’t here at all, that they are still tucked safely in Camelot – he would wish no strange hell on his King, not even on Merlin, whom fails to trust him still. He looks again to the lockers and moves to one, unsure of them as he raises a hand, his eyes flickering gold, but only the door of one shudders weakly. It’s exhausting, using even that bit of magic and he looks deflated. He did not have magic in this place, he had no friend, no bearing, and yet he knows, somehow, he needs to escape.
“Again, what is this place? Who has brought me here and to what cause?”
He hears an answer, The Tranquility, and has to sit down, not understanding what that is, but all he knows is that it is very, very far from home.
Comms Sample:
[The feed flickers on, video broadcasting, and there is a rather nasty sound from the other end,as the communicator is dropped. Mordred picks it up, turns it about and examines it closely, uncertain of the way it looks and the strange things it does.]
I’ve been told I may use this as a form of communication, but I fear I may have been tricked.
[It wouldn’t be anything new after all, Mordred was teased by the Knights back in Camelot frequently! Unfortunately, Mordred doesn’t pick up this technology like he should, and instead continues to look at it strangely, even as he speaks into the little object.]
This place… I’m still not entirely sure how I came to be here, but I’m becoming more aware of my surroundings in the least. It does me little good on my own, however. I’ve seen many people out, but how does this place work? We have air, food, water – I see we are well cared for, but why come here at all?
I suppose I must be missing something. Perhaps someone else has insights?
